Jean-Francois Sobiecki. B.Sc.Bot. (Wits)., B.Sc.Hons. EthnoBot. (UJ)., Dipl Clin Nutr. (Aus).

Jean-Francois is a qualified ethnobotanist (medicinal plant researcher), nutritionist, medicinal plant healer and research associate with the University of Johannesburg.

Jean-Francois has been actively involved in the field of natural medicine and health promotion for over 20 years, having training and experience in clinical nutrition, herbal medicine, therapeutic massage and permaculture design.

His research and academic publications on South African medicinal plant use to heal the nervous system have made valuable contributions to the field of African ethnobotany, some of which have been highlighted as a Frontiers research topic.

Having grandparents who were healers and academic teachers has allowed Jean the ability to bridge both the scientific and cultural aspects of healing. Jean uses this gift in his practice in order to help his patients integrate the different levels of being (body, mind, spirit, social and environmental relationships).

Some of his achievements include:

Designing innovative employee wellness training: e.g., The Fundamental Principles of Holistic Medicine that he has run successfully with a number of organizations including national PnP.

Original research publications (7 academic papers and 1 book chapter), writing articles on healing for the popular press in South Africa and currently completing two books on healing.

Holding public seminars and workshops on holistic medicine and wellness.

Project managing and evaluating a fortified nutritional intervention project with the University of the Witwatersrand.

Establishing an NGO focused on food and medicinal plant gardening.

Jean-Francois currently runs his own nutritionist and health and wellness coaching practice in Fourways Johannesburg.

He is also developing an innovative project called the Khanyisa Healing Garden in order to document and utilize South Africas threatened indigenous cultural knowledge of healing plants for local health promotion, community capacity building and research. See www.khanyisagarden.co.za
